If you have a large living room in your house, sometimes it can be challenging to properly decorate that massive space. Large spaces present their own decorating troubles, just as small spaces do. If you are face with a large living room and don’t quite know how to proceed, here are some tips to keep in mind to get you started.

Use Dark Colors to Decorate
The best way to make a space appear smaller is to use dark colors when decorating. If you paint the walls of the living room a few shades darker than you normally would, you will notice that the room will appear smaller.

If you don’t want the entire room to appear smaller, then try using darker colors to accessorize the room, as this will often give it less of a large feel. By using dark-colored furniture or even carpet in your large living room, you’ll make the room feel slightly smaller and not so big and open.

Use the Space in the Living Room Accordingly
If your living room is large, then you need to use the space accordingly. Among other things, this means that all the seating shouldn’t be right on top of each other. Be sure you evenly distribute the furniture throughout the room, spacing it out according to the space you’re working with. Another thing to remember is to leave plenty of space between the couch and the arts and crafts coffee table. This way, people will be able to walk between the two. When you plan accordingly and utilize the space properly in a large room, you’ll be able to create a room that feels more comfortable and quaint, and not too cold and open.

Use Large Pieces of Art to Decorate the Walls
Before you choose a piece of art for your wall, you need to consider the area of blank space you are working with. If you have a very large blank wall in your living room, for instance, you don’t want to hang a 5×7 picture there. Rather, hang a portrait or some other piece that will take up most of the upper half of the wall. Another option is to use several smaller art pieces to make a pattern or collage for the wall. In this case, though, you want to be sure to space the artwork out so that it is covering a majority of the wall.

Buy a Large Piece of Furniture
Consider purchasing a large piece of furniture for your large living room if you don’t already have one. An entertainment center, a bookshelf, or a large couch would work well, or you might even look for something like a piano or pool table.

The presence of a large piece of furniture can make the room appear smaller and more properly proportioned with the other items in the room. You can also use this oversized furnishing as a focal point and decorate the rest of the room around it.

The most important thing to focus on when it comes to decorating a large living room is properly utilizing the space. By only using a small area of the room, the room will then look massive and not very appealing. But if you use the entire space as much as possible, including the walls, you can make your large living room more appealing and perhaps even give it a quaint and comfortable feeling.
