Learning About Kitchen Remodels And Appliances

Kathy Burns-Millyard

Kitchen remodeling can be both exciting yet overwhelming, especially for those who might be new to the experience all together. Understanding how to incorporate overall flow and function while keeping design concepts in mind can be challenging enough; however, many tend to overlook the smaller details such as small appliances.

Types of small appliance items that are usually neglected by those who are new to remodeling, especially within the kitchen, are things such as over the range microwave units, dishwashers, built-in wine coolers and so forth. Often times this leaves many people in a rut later on, either in the midst of the rebuild, well after the fact, or even being stuck with choices that are less than what they hoped for.

To be better prepared before taking on any type of kitchen remodel, it’s generally a good idea to sort what sort of items you want or must have in order to make the entire process worth it and more cost-effective in the scheme of things. It’s often recommended that homeowners make a list of desirable items that they wish to have in their kitchen and where they might prefer to have them located.

The size of your kitchen space can sometimes factor into where appliances might end up being in the scheme of things. However, thinking about how you generally prefer to travel, or what seems most logical, in order to use the appliances in mind is often a good thing to think about in advance as well. This way you’re ensuring better function when using your kitchen.

A perfect example of small appliance placement and thinking ahead of things would be something like a microwave oven. Microwave ovens, for the most part, aren’t overly big and are often something we forget about, but something that many homeowners use frequently. Some may prefer to have, for instance, a hood over their stove, requiring them to find another spot to have a built-in unit installed, or to simply go for a countertop microwave if there’s enough room to spare.

Thinking ahead of time about how accessible you want specific appliances to be within regards to their location to other items within the kitchen that may be related to is also something to consider. For example, some may prefer to have their dishwasher closer to the kitchen sink, so that they can easily rinse of dishes before washing them, while others may prefer them closer to where dishes are put away. Either way, the key is to aim for what will add the most function to your kitchen and life a little easier for you.

Another thing that homeowners may want to consider while designing their kitchen is the type of appliance they’re going to want, as well as what features may be more beneficial to them versus what other brands or models might offer. Microwaves are a classic example for features, especially as their technology grows. For instance, many are enjoying one-button-press cook-time features such as what many ge microwave units now offer, as well as auto defrost and special cooking functions available by many brands. No matter which brand one decides on, however, it’s always a good idea to research and compare against other models offered in today’s market in order to ensure the best bang for your buck.
